After his childhood dreams of
becoming a horse jockey were
crushed by his overwhelming height of 6'2'', his mother suggested Howe become a writer. He was extremely involved with theater in college and began to write Children's books, his first being ''Bunnicula'' published in the late 1970's. Howe continued on to write excellent Children's novels that deal with themes of acceptance, self-empowerment, and celebrating diversity.
Summary
This funny and original childrens novel tells is the coming out story of Joe Bunch told through an assignment to write an alphabiography. You learn about his friends in the gang of five, the struggles to be himself in the face of adversity (middle school) and the complication of having his first boyfriend. By the time Joe gets to the letter Z he has learned so much about himself and "that being who you are isn't a choice."
